Medical Laboratory Technology Program

The Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) is qualified academically in applied science education to provide clinical laboratory skills and knowledge in rapidly changing and dynamic healthcare delivery systems. Medical laboratory technicians perform, evaluate, correlate, and assure accuracy and validity of laboratory information; direct and supervise clinical laboratory resources and operations; and collaborate in diagnosing and treating patients.


Associate Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology

  • The Medical Laboratory Technology Program (MLT) at Shelton State Community College (SSCC) will prepare the student to possess the entry-level competencies necessary to perform routine clinical laboratory tests in all major areas of the medical laboratory.
  • The level of medical laboratory analysis ranges from waived and point of care testing to complex testing.
  • Medical Laboratory Technicians demonstrate ethical and moral attitudes and principles necessary for gaining and maintaining the confidence of patients, professional associates, and the community.
  • The Associate in Applied Science program offers a balanced curriculum which consists of general education and medical laboratory technician courses designed to be completed in five consecutive semesters.

Educational Options

  • Associate Degree in Applied Sciences (A.A.S.)
  • After completing the MLT Program, a student is eligible to take the National Board of Certification (BOC) examination by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or other agencies and become a nationally certified medical laboratory technician.

Certification and Licensure

Upon graduation from the MLT Program at SSCC, the graduate will be eligible to sit for the National Board of Certification (BOC) by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) and or other agencies.
